Toyota has announced that they will end production of the retro-inspired FJ Cruiser in August this year, an SUV that has been on sale since 2010, for the handful of markets that still get the two-door SUV.

The FJ Cruiser was first introduced at the Detroit Auto Show 2005 as an off-roader inspired by the brand’s cult classic FJ40 Land Cruiser.

Toyota tug the FJ Cruiser from North American dealerships a couple of years ago, but sales have continued in Japan, Australia, China, and Middle East, among other places that tend to favor rugged SUVs.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a midsize SUV which is harks back to the company’s iconic FJ40 Series of Land Cruisers. Like the old FJ40, the Toyota FJ Cruiser has superior off-road capabilities. It is built on a truck-based, ladder-frame chassis and features a stout suspension and drivetrain, sharing underlying hardware with Toyota’s 4Runner SUV. Toyota designed the FJ Cruiser to be a bit extra specialized, however. Compared to the 4Runner, it is smaller, less expensive and extra capable in off-road situations, and it is meant to appeal to younger and more active consumers.

Throughout its life-cycle, the FJ – which is based on a shortened Land Cruiser Prado – has been powered through a single engine, a normally-aspirated 4.0 litre V6. The 1GR-FE, that can also be found on the Tundra and Tacoma, has had its power output revised over the years in the FJ application, and in the current Australian model offers 268 hp and 380 Nm.

Toyota hasn’t announced any special edition models to close out the FJ Cruiser production run like it did with the high-feature Ultimate Edition provide to American consumers in 2014 before the SUV was pulled here.
